The main concerns with CPR and intubation are broken ribs (81%), brain/neurological damage (33%), and effectiveness (10%-20% of cases).

A long stay in an intensive care unit is not uncommon. Because of these common complications, "Do Not Attempt" is a common choice for individuals who do not want to live with brain damage, either because they only want to live if they are fully functioning outside a nursing facility or do not want to be a burden on their family.
